This week we were given a required post subject and we were asked to write about how to measure happiness. Many people have seen those little magnets that you put on you refrigerator or doors that say today I feel… and there are numerous emotions that you move a little magnetic square over to frame how you are feeling that day. Although this may be a good way to tell how someone is feeling that day or at that time how can you measure that? On a scale of 1-10? 1 being most unhappy and 10 being extremely happy? Well what do people consider really unhappy or extremely happy? Most people if asked wouldn’t know how to tell you what is what or would give a general response or even give you an answer but most everyone is going to be different. I do not think there truly is a way to measure people’s happiness because most people can only compare it to experiences well not everyone has had the same experiences and levels of happiness change depending on many things and can change throughout life as experiences happen. The only thing one could do to measure happiness is to ask on a scale of 1-10 (1 = unhappy and 10 = extricate) how happy are you right now. This is the only thing I could come up with but I’m sure there are many other good ideas on how to do this, maybe monitor hormones released when people are happy, or brain waves, or heart rate or something but there really is no way to measure happiness as it is not a constant.
